Volunteer at Oakhurst Forest Preserve

If you are local to Aurora Illinois, and are looking to engage in community service, then why not become a volunteer at Oakhurst Forest Preserve. Since 2017, the steward at Oakhurst has hosted workdays in which members of the public clear invasive brush, pull weeds, collect and broadcast seed, plant trees, identify plants, monitor fungi, and clean up trash around the lake and sled hill. With nearly 400 acres of woodland, grassland, and lake and marsh that is home to at least 24 invasive plant species, there is plenty to keep us busy all year round.

Volunteering has long been shown to have many health benefits, both physical and mental. It can help lower your stress levels, and provide a much need boost your to self-confidence and self-worth. Workday event can be a moderate workout: walking, lifting, carrying, stretching, and operating tools. It is a great way to socialize and meet new people, all the while discovering the natural world around you.

Anyone can become a volunteer, regardless of age or ability. All you need to do is show up with a pair of gloves, and you will be put to work! If you wish to know more before committing, then check out the sections on volunteering and workday safety.
