Workzone M1.1 Report

Summary

This "island" workzone is the area located between the two shelters in management unit M1. Two mowed paths dissect the zone, forming four quadrants; the quadrant closest to the lake is the largest and where teasel and purple loosestrife is most concentrated. Non-native shrubs in this area include buckthorn, honeysuckle, callery pear, autumn olive, and crab apple. Other trees include willow and honeylocust.

2018-08-21 Finished work in workzone M1.1. Will return to consolidate cut brush. Plan to cut brush after poison ivy dies down - have operation remove the dead ash trees.

2018-08-08 Finished clearing teasel, burdock and Canada thistle from among the oaks trees (work zone G1.3.4). Follow up work is required: herbicide larger teasel/burdock late summer to encourage new seed to germinate. Then treat new rosettes in fall and again in spring. Reseed with whorled milkweed.

2018-08-05 Continued clearing the teasel on top of the hill (workzone G1.3.4). Need to return to herbicide cut buckthorn.

2018-07-31 Gathered and piled stalks previously cut by brush saw (zone 11). Started cutting the dense teasel stand on the south mound next to the sumac. Little other vegetable except for cocklebur. Herbicide ASAP to kill/reduce rosettes and encourage more germination of seed. Possibly 2nd herbicide in late fall and next spring. Reseed with whorled milkweed. This is the first year of control.
