Workzone F4.5 Report
Updated 12/14/2023

Summary

In fall of 2017, restoration work began on clearing the buckthorn and honeysuckle from underneath the oak trees. As this area was severely degraded, and few native forbs were present. The workzone was be seeded with a mixture of common woodland plants harvested from other locations. By 2021, all of the brush was finally removed from the workzone and piled in the adjacent field. Bottlebrush grass, Joe Pye Weed, and snakeroot are firmly established, bu the undergrowth is still patchy. In 2023, the first ever Jack-in-pulpit was detected, and its berries scattered. A single wingstem and late figwort were also detected. Area still requires a lot of resprout control in order to keep the buckthorn under control.

2019-03-16 Removing previously cut brush from workzone F4.5 before wildflowers emerge. Area was heavily degraded, so wildflowers a few, but I recall a patch of mayapple hiding somewhere under the buckthorn. There are also asters along the edge, so I would like get most of the brush moved out of the workzone and into G1.4.4. Formed first brush pile in adjacent field (4.4)

2017-10-15 While this is a small area, there are many mature buckthorn crowding out young red oaks trees. Goal is to clear the area of large buckthorn by end of 2017. Will follow through with resprout herbiciding in the spring.
