Workzone F2.1.1 Report
Updated 12/14/2023

Summary

This boundary of this workzone is defined by the trail to the north, the shallow pool to the south, the edge of the woodland to the west, and a deer trail to the east that crosses the wetland. Most of the brush is located in the wetter portions of the workzone, especially along the woodland edge where it is more difficult to navigate through. Brush is predominately common buckthorn and glossy buckthorn, with honeysuckle and bittersweet found at the edge. Occasional species include multi-flora rose, Japanese barberry, and privet. Spring flora consists of the usual cohorts found across the unit: toothworth and cresses, spring beauty, violet, mayapple, phlox, trillium, trout lily, jack-in-the pulpit, wild ginger, buttercup, geranium, Virginia & great waterleaf. Less common species include bloodroot, false rue anemone, and hepatica.

2019-02-02 Oriental bittersweet is present along the woodland edge of zone 1.1. Goal is to remove as much of the invasive shrubs before dealing with the vine in spring. Dogwoods, elderberry and cherry will be left untouched for habitat.

2018-01-28 Cut mostly buckthorn from wet area of woods, plus a small patch of oriental bittersweet near trail entrance. Last week's work area thawed and flooded. Trash collected. Trekked through the northern woodland - and was disappointed to see A LOT of oriental bittersweet of considerable size. However, older parts of the oak woodland are still in good condition free of most invasives.
